How To Fix A Squeaky Melmer!!!

Hello readers! I am super excited about this post because I found a solution to a problem that has been plaguing my ears... my squeaky melmer bottom drawers! Seriously, the screech it made when being opened was akin to a cat who's tail you'd just stepped on. The difference between the bottom drawer and the top two is that the top two slid on plastic rails where the bottom one slid against the wood bottom of the cabinet. Solution: Add plastic!

Plastic strips cut to size.

I have two melmers stacked on top of each other, so the third drawer down and the sixth drawer down are both 'bottom drawers'. I cut up a Color Club box to get four strips of thin plastic.  I then placed these strips flush with the other edges of the cabinet.  Then, I used packing tape to tape down the three free edges (back, inside and front) of the plastic strips.

Plastic strips taped in place.
Then, just slip the drawer back in and be amazed. I hope this solution works for you just as well as it did for me!  Now I don't dread opening those bottom drawers.

Happy polishing!

  1. That's a great idea for a fix! I am in desperate need of storage but when I looked at the Helmer's at Ikea I kind of hated how flimsy they were. Do you like your Melmers?

    1. Other than that bottom drawer's horrible squeaking, yes. I really like that they're modular so I can add more if needed. They're pricey when not on sale... but if you keep an eye on Michael's flyers they often have 50% craft storage sales which brings the price down to $25CAD. I was lucky when I bought mine because I found an extra 20% all items coupon when they were on sale so ended up paying $20CAD a piece.

    1. Hmmm, I never thought of that.... likely because I have never bought furniture polish before in my life :P.

  3. Never thought of this idea! Thank goodness before I loaded up my first Melmer, I had seen on a blog where someone suggested putting those little felt feet stickers for the bottom drawer to drag on. I happened to have plenty to choose from, including square ones that perfectly fit the corners. So I just took the bottom drawer out, flipped it over, stuck the felt stickers on those corner edges in the back only, and the drawer pulls smooth and quiet. Whatever works! :)

    1. I thought of that but was worried they might add too much thickness. Good to know they don't! I'll have a back up plan if this one fails for whatever reason.
